Veracruz Tour Guide
Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico
and including Boca Del Rio, Veracruz, Mexico

Mercado Hidalgo
textfacade facade

No place is more fun than the City's open air market. The market is in an old structure, and has booths selling everything you can imagine. Mercado Hidalgo is the main market, but on all sides are sidewalks also completely filled with booths. (We must say that The Language Immersion School does not buy its meat, poultry or dairy products at the market, but many people do.)

Fish Market
textfacade facade

Relocated to a new facility two years ago, the City's wholesale fish market is a treat for any fish lover. Fishermen leave the coast in their 27 foot long boats for hard hours out on the Gulf of Mexico, and they bring in wonderful supplies of freshly caught fish. Much of it is shipped directly from the small fishing boats to Mexico City, but plenty of it stays here in Veracruz..

Tianguis
textfacade facade

The tianguis is akin to a flee market, but it's all new stuff. It's only open a few days each week. The vendors wheel into town late in the evening and by morning they've removed their wares (clothing and music mostly) from their trucks and small trailers and have set up their displays. There is also a large restaurant area. At day's end, they pack up and head out to the next stop on their weeklong sales loop.
Address Almost as the end of the line on the Boca del Rio Mocambo bus route. Ask the driver where to get off.
hours: 8:00AM to 8:PM, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday in Boca del Rio

Zocalo
textfacade facade

The zocalo is the city's heart. And it beats with happiness. Open air restaurants line one side of this the central plaza. Another is home to the Municipal Palace. On a third is the Cathedral, and the fourth opens onto Calle Independencia. The zocalo starts getting busy around six in the evening, comes fully to life around nine, and doesn't stop until four in the morning.
Address: in El Centro, just ask anybody for instructions
hours: all day and all night until four in the morning

Malecon
textfacade facade

It's almost impossible to find a malecon (waterfront walkway) as magnificant at Veracruz's. Starting deep in the harbor where working ships are a stone's throw away and passing out of the harbor and along the beaches the malecon goes on for miles and miles.

Smaller Plazas and El Centro
textfacade facade

The center of Veracruz, economic, tourism, arts, shopping, government, parades, is the old downtown. El Centro is the general term for a city's downtown. Veracruz, one of the new world's oldest cities, usually calls it the Centro Historico. As is traditional in old cities, through out downtown are small plazas tucked in here and there. Walking the regular streets or the narrow callejons, there's always a new plaza to discover

Zamora Park

Veracruz's large downtown park.
Address: Although many sided, it easy to access from Calle General Prim between Victimas and Rayon.

Zoo

Here's a favorite stop for kids when they come to town. Although there isn't funding for a fancy zoo, this one draws positive comments. And... it's home, so say the kids, to the world's ugliest dog.

Once the pro baseball stadium. The botanical gardens is a beautiful place and for the little ones it has great climbing toys.

Cri Cri
textfacade facade

Cri Cri is a theme park for children. The Cri Cri characters are as loved by local children as are Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The creator of the Cri Cri clan was born in Orizaba, Ver., a city lying at the base of the Orizaba Peak (North Armerica's third highest mountain peak).

Bad Bridge
textfacade facade

Here's an overpass spanning the railroad yard that was of fine original design. But the authorities, now many years back, forgot to ask the folk along the then ground level street what they thought about becoming airborn. It turns out they didn't think much of the plan. At their insistence, the bridge, already under construction, had its approaches shortened and realigned. The result feels a little like a carnaval ride.

Boca del Rio
textfacade facade

Mexico is organized around municipios, and these are more akin to counties than cities and towns. The port city of Veracruz is the government seat of the Municipio de Veracruz which is located in the State of Veracruz. The adjacent municipio is Boca del Rio. The metropolitan area includes parts of both municipios.
